NUE/Stress Tolerance

PSS has developed a unique technology employing a single gene construct to confer multiple value-added traits that include: increased Nitrogen Use Efficiency, Water Use Efficiency, and tolerance to abiotic stresses (heat and drought). The technology introduces a novel protein that encodes a dominant trait thus allowing it to be readily moved into any crop.

Initial research, funded by the National Science Foundation, has demonstrated proof of concept in the plant model system, Arabidopsis.

Compared to wildtype plants, plants transformed with the PSS NUE/Stress Tolerance technology:

      • are 25 to 100% larger
      • require less nitrogen to achieve normal yields
      • have a 25% greater yield under nitrogen-deficient and nitrogen-sufficient conditions
      • use 20 to 40% less water
      • produce 26 to 124% more seed (by weight) after drought treatment
      • have a 3 to 4 times greater survival rate when exposed to high temperature

PSS has filed US and international patent applications on the NUE/Stress Tolerance technology.
