Metabolic Regulators

PSS has applied the Metabolic Regulator technology to target carbon metabolism to increase seed oil content. An increase in seed oil content is needed to increase crop productivity per acre to help meet the rapidly growing biodiesel and food demand.

Initial research, funded by the Department of Energy, has demonstrated proof of concept in the plant model system, Arabidopsis.

Compared to wildtype plants, plants transformed with the PSS Metabolic Regulator technology have:

• 8 to 25% higher ratios of carbon-to-nitrogen in the seeds
• double-digit increases in oil (triacylglycerides)
• similar germination rates and seed yields

PSS has filed US and international patent applications on the technology.
